It’s no secret that countries within Asia have no shortage of absolutely delicious and inexpensive restaurants. If you are like us and love a great meal without straying too far (or at all) from a backpacking budget, you’re in the right spot!
Here is a list of eight awesome restaurants we have found during our travels that are without a doubt deserving of a visit. At all of these places, you should expect to spend at or well below $10 USD per person and you will leave with a big smile on your face! Some local…some western, but all AMAZING!
Banh Mi 25 (Hanoi, Vietnam)
Banh Mi is a well known Vietnamese sandwich in a delicious french baguette. A fusion of meats and vegetables, the common ingredients are pork (and other meats), coriander leaf, cucumber, pickled carrots, and pickled daikon along with condiments such as pâté, chili and mayonnaise.
Banh Mi 25 offers a convenient location in Old Quarter with sandwich prices from just 20K VND/$0.86 USD to 40K VND/$1.72 USD. The mango smoothie was also one of the best we have had. A must visit and great choice for travelers who want to enjoy the beauty of street food in Hanoi for a great price!
Ichiran Ramen (locations throughout Japan)
We can, without a doubt, say that this is the BEST bowl of ramen that we have ever had. From the extremely organized ordering and serving to the last sip of the mouthwatering broth, this place has it all!
The standard option is 980 Yen/$9.22 USD while the set is 1,580 Yen/$14.87 USD and includes extra pork, a soft boiled egg, kikurage mushrooms and dried seaweed. Be sure to order a half or full order of Kae-Dama (noodle refill) if you are extra hungry!
KoDam Kitchen (Ao Nang, Thailand)
During our time in Ao Nang, we visited KoDam Kitchen multiple times. The owner and staff went above and beyond every single time to make sure everything was perfect.
Our favorite dishes were the Pad Thai chicken with egg nest and Panaeng Chicken which were between $3 – $4 USD each. These were some of the best dishes we had during our month in southern Thailand!
Bliss Restaurant (Siargao, Philippines)
It is slightly embarrassing (not really) how many times we ate at Bliss Restaurant during our week in Siargao. The owner, chefs and staff were all amazing and the breakfast was delicious. After multiple visits for breakfast, we both found the Bebot to be our favorite…and unbelievably filling!
Our lunch and dinners here were equally exquisite. The spaghetti aglio olio pepperoncino with chicken and meatballs rigatoni were masterpieces. We also heard great things about the risotto ai funghi as well. Dan even thinks the meatball rigatoni was one of his best meals on this trip!
PRO TIP: Do not miss the chocolate mousse dessert!
Milk & Madu (Berawa and Ubud, Bali, Indonesia)
Milk & Madu was pretty much where we went for dinner every Sunday and Tuesday while in Canggu and Ubud. They have an AWESOME 2 for 1 pizza deal on these days, so you can get two very delicious (and very filling) pizzas for between 120K IDR/$7.95 USD and 160 IDR/$10.61 USD.
Our favorites were the Classic Pepperoni (140K IDR), Classic Prosciutto (140K IDR), Quattro Formaggio (160K IDR), Choice Lamb Bru (160K IDR). The Madu Garlic Bread (35K IDR) is also a wonderful way to start the meal and all of the pastas looked amazing as well. Go for the delicious food and stay for the great live music!
PRO TIP: The chili oil is amazing on pretty much everything (especially the garlic bread and pizza crust)!
Crate Cafe (Canggu, Bali, Indonesia)
Once we find a place we like, we tend to become repeat customers. In Canggu, a prime example of this was Crate Cafe. We came here on numerous occasions for all-day breakfast, but every dish and beverage looked great. With HUGE (and delicious) portions, it’s really hard to beat the 55K IDR/$3.63 USD entree prices.
Michelle’s favorite was The Barber and Dan might have fallen in love with the Brekkie Plate. The open air atmosphere and good music makes this a place you will want to take your time and really enjoy your meal!
La Baracca (Seminyak, Canggu, Uluwatu + Ubud, Bali, Indonesia)
La Baracca is definitely one of the best Italian meals we have had during this trip. While there are multiple locations in Bali, we only visited the one in Uluwatu which had amazing food and a really cool decor.
Some of our favorite dishes were the Ravioli That’s Amore (89K IDR/$5.90 USD), Gnocci Scamorza Salsiccia E Funghi (95K IDR/$6.30 USD) and a Tagliatelle with fresh burrata in a parmesean sauce special. The pizzas also looked delicious. If you have the option, sit in the back garden for a candlelit dinner!
Flo! Restaurant (Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka)
Arugam Bay is a cool little surf town in the southeast part of Sri Lanka. During our time here, we LOVED Flo ! Restaurant and visited it numerous times.
The owner and his family were amazing people and the food was delicious. Our favorite dish was the Prawn Pasta special and the Fried Calamari appetizer. They also had GREAT local dishes, but at this point during our time in Sri Lanka we weren’t in the mood for more rice and curry!
