Mirissa is one of the most popular beach destinations in southern Sri Lanka. The golden-sand beaches are beautiful, the waves are surfworthy, the atmosphere is laid-back and there are plenty of restaurants and bars to check out.  The best time to visit Mirissa is from December until April. In this guide to Mirissa you’ll find some insight into our lodging, restaurant recommendations and things to do in the area!

We stayed at Little Angels guesthouse during our time in Mirissa. Unfortunately, we came during the rainy season, stayed for two nights, and spent a good amount of our time indoors. Luckily, Little Angels was the perfect little spot to explore Mirissa during the short rain breaks during the day. The owners were lovely and the breakfast was delicious!

If you’re looking for other budget friendly options, check out:

  • The Secret Guesthouse – $35 per night, excellent reviews, breakfast included
  • N 34 – $35 per night, excellent reviews, breakfast included
  • Banana Garden – $26 per night, excellent reviews, breakfast included

If you love the beach, Mirissa is the perfect place to be a sun bum! Here are some things to do during your time in Mirissa:

Coconut Tree Hill – Close to our guesthouse, the way to get to Coconut Tree Hill is fairly easy. The view from here is beautiful but try to get here early as its always filled with tourists. Also, if you look close enough, you can see turtles swimming in the waters below.

Secret Beach – This not so secret beach was one of our favorite spots in Mirissa. You can hire a tuk tuk driver to the main entrance, follow the sign that says “Secret Beach” and trek down a makeshift path. It’s the perfect place to spend the day.

Parrot Rock – Located on Mirissa Beach, Parrot Rock is a small rock where you can climb up and see a bit of the Mirissa area (only during low tide).

Mirissa Beach – During high season, this beach can get crowded but there are plenty of restaurants that offer daybeds if you purchase a drink or food.

Surfing – Mirissa is another great spot to surf. Take some time to take a lesson or rent a board for the day!

If you’re traveling anywhere in Asia, TripAdvisor is without a doubt the best place to check out restaurant reviews. Dan’s TripAdvisor page has a more robust amount of reviews and pictures of our meals.

Petti Petti – This is a beautiful restaurant with great ambience. Their rice and curry was delicious and the staff and service was excellent! If you have lunch there, you can also enjoy the pool after your meal.

Fresh Wave Restaurant – Located right on the beach, the food was delicious, and the staff and service was excellent.

Shady Lane – A cute little breakfast spot with beautiful smoothie bowls. This place is a must go to if breakfast is not included in your lodging.

If you love animals especially doggos, you can reach out to Ceylon Paws in Weligama (about 20 minutes drive from Mirissa). They are a local animal passion project dedicated to helping the street dogs in Sri Lanka. You can reach out to them directly for short or long term volunteer opportunities on Instagram (@ceylonpaws).

If you know of any volunteer opportunities in the Mirissa area, we would love to feature it on our page. Reach out to us via email at jetsetforgood@gmail.com or DM us on Instagram (@jetsetforgood).

That’s our guide to Mirissa but like always, all opinions are entirely our own. Above all, enjoy Sri Lanka!
